The USB version of Gravis's GamePad Pro makes for an extremely simple setup--in Windows 98, all you need to do is plug it in and start playing. Mac setup is almost as simple and involves an additional software installation with the provided software.

The GamePad Pro's long 8-foot connecting cable gives you plenty of room to take a step or two back from your PC while gaming. The gamepad also features hot swapping so you can plug and unplug various USB peripherals without having to reboot or turn off your machine. In Windows 98, the gamepad uses the driver for an "HID Compliant Game Controller," so you can start playing right after installation, without having to calibrate the pad. Upon installation, you can also immediately access the Test area of the Game Controllers function to make sure the gamepad is connected properly.

The GamePad Pro's basic layout should be familiar to anyone who's ever played a console game (in fact, it closely resembles the standard PlayStation controller). It has a thumb-controlled directional pad on the left for movement, four action buttons on the right, and four flipper buttons on the top of the pad to handle additional game controls. If you're one of those folks who'd rather manage movement with a stick, the GamePad Pro also features an attachable joystick that screws into the middle of the D-pad. However, the pad can feel a bit small for users with sizable hands.

The GamePad Pro works well for sports games (it was perfect for NFL Blitz 2000) and action games, but is limited by the number of buttons for more involved games, such as first-person shooters.

In addition to quick installation, the GamePad Pro also boasts a nice sticker price. If you're looking for an easy-to-use gamepad to handle basic controls in your games, the GamePad Pro should do the trick. --J. Curtis

Get the controller that converts your body action into onscreen action. Wingman GamePad Extreme includes the G-Force Tilt sensor--when you lean forward or back, left or right, your favorite games understand. When you're using the motion sensor, the D-pad acts like an 8-way hat switch--perfect for action and flight games. Turn off the sensor, and the D-pad becomes a comfortable and precise digital controller. Grab onto this sci-fi boomerang-shaped controller and it may throw you at first. The Logitech Wingman Gamepad Extreme looks like a cross between your garden-variety gamepad and something you're likely to use with your PlayStation, but it works well on your PC.

The digital movement pad is a little persnickety at times as it's locked into eight-way movement. At first it'll madden and infuriate you, because you might move your controller in that dead position where nothing happens. That's when you may want to test out its aerodynamic shape as you fling it towards the garbage heap. But be patient... with practice you'll be able to work your way around turns with agility and precision.

One intriguing option is the G-Force Tilt motion sensor. With the press of a button, the eight-way pad turns into a hat switch, and the actual tilting of the controller determines the onscreen movement. Want to move backwards? Tilt the controller back. Tilt left, and you're turning left. You get the idea. The only foreseeable problem is if you slouch or sit with a 45-degree list to port.

The 10 buttons are sensibly placed and easy to latch on to with little effort, while the WingMan Profiler software enables you to simply program your buttons to perform other in-game tasks. Try putting it to the test with the bundled version of Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D and you'll be flying high in no time.

The only thing nicer than the fact that the Wingman Gamepad Extreme can work through your USB or game port is that Logitech backs it up with a one-year warranty.
